Dr. Kathy A. Banks is a graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She completed the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program, and then completed her Post Graduate Residency Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the UMDNJ, now Rutger’s Dental School. Dr. Bank’s is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Anesthesiology and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. She is an attending oral and maxillofacial Surgeon at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey and holds a volunteer faculty teaching position at Rutgers Dental School. She is a fellow of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Dr. Banks is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in private practice in Barnegat, New Jersey.

THIS EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY is intended to train licensed dental hygienists and registered dental assistants in the monitoring of a patient to whom the supervising dentist has administered nitrous oxide/ oxygen inhalation analgesia. This course will cover all important aspects of the science associated with nitrous/oxide/oxygen analgesia. Emphasis will be placed on: reasons and indication to use nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia; case/patient selection-pediatric, adolescent, adult ,medically compromised; equipment and operation; how to monitor a patient; how to take vital signs; pre/post op instructions; consent and record keeping; recognizing complications that may occur during monitoring; and maintaining proper records with accurate chart entries.

Overall Learning Objectives:
The objectives of this three hour lecture is that the course attendee/DHCP will be able to:

1. List and discuss the indications and contraindications for the use of nitrous oxide-oxygen inhalation analgesia.
2. Discuss case and patient selection for nitrous/oxide oxygen analgesia and application to adults, adolescents, children, aged, medically compromised, mentally compromised, (emotional and psychological issues).
3. Discuss the monitoring of nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation analgesia on patients in a clinical setting in a safe an effective manner; taking and recording of vital signs.

Method of Participation:

This internet enduring presentation is an educational video presentation sponsored by the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Department of Dentistry, Department of Continuing Dental Education, Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Meridian Health. In order to receive credit, participants must complete the entire educational activity and complete a multiple choice test at the end of the video presentation. Participants must also complete the online post-activity course evaluation form to receive credit.
