THIS EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY will explore the research surrounding the science of hope and the relationship between hope and grit, and their effect on mood. Hope is an optimistic attitude of mind based on an expectation of positive outcomes. Hope and resilience are both stable, psychological traits that can act as protective factors against adversity. Many studies have shown that mood states have a direct impact on physical health. Indices of positive mood (positive psychology) are associated with biological health markers, such as immune system response, cortisol profiles, and cardiovascular function. Hope and resilience have also been associated with better physical and mental health outcomes in as well as better health and well-being. Even after experiencing severe trauma, hopeful individuals can experience post-traumatic growth. Grit is defined as the passion and perseverance for long-term goals along with the belief that you have the power to make it so. Grit is associated with character strength, which is at least as valuable, or more valuable than intelligence or IQ.
