Course Title: Unintended Consequences of Opioids: We can Minimize Opioids


Michael A. Kelly, M.D.

Michael A. Kelly, M.D. is the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Hackensack University Medical Center. His practice ids limited to all aspects of knee surgery. The author of numerous professional articles on many aspects of knee surgery, he also co-edited the textbook Surgery of the Knee 2nd Edition. He has lectured throughout the U.S. and internationally on topics related to sports medicine and knee reconstruction. Dr. Kelly is active in clinical research on knee disorders, and is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine and the American Orthopaedic Association. He is presently President of the prestigious American Knee Society. Dr. Kelly has also served as the head team physician of the New Jersey Nets of the National Basketball Association.

Description
THIS EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY is designed to address pertinent substance use disorder and present an overview of emerging methods of acute pain control. It will assist the participants in becoming more familiar with the current evidenced based approaches to minimize the use of prescription opiates.
Substance use disorders are seen in patients throughout our health care system with prescription drug abuse reaching the level of an epidemic in our area. Relieving pain is one of the most challenging, yet important responsibility in the practice of medicine. This course will also address the New Jersey state regulations on prescribing opiates.

Number of Credit Hours: Hackensack Meridian Health MH designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in this activity.

Cost: There is no cost to registrants for this educational activity

Overall Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this educational activity the participant should be able to:

1. Identify steps to reduce negative consequences of opiate prescriptions;
2. Recognize that first time exposure to opioid use in surgery may lead to long-term abuse and addiction;
3. Determine that the use of a multimodal approach to post-operative pain can be very effective and minimize opioid use.

Method of Participation:

This internet enduring presentation is an educational video presentation. In order to receive credit, physicians must complete the entire educational activity and complete a multiple choice test at the end of the video presentation. Participants must also complete the online post-activity course evaluation form to receive credit.
